What should I do if there is adhesive residue after tearing off the film?

With the change of people's attitudes, maintenance for their beloved cars is no longer exclusive to the wealthy. More car owners are willing to spend time and money to make their cars cleaner and more attractive for reasons such as aesthetics or value preservation. Applying paint protection film is one of the maintenance methods.

However, inferior paint facial mask on the market are emerging one after another, not all of them can provide excellent protection effect. Hydrolysis, degumming, tear film residue and other problems are also very troublesome for many car owners, and it is also quite a headache when removing the glue. Today, let's learn about the possible problems and solutions of tear film and glue.

Why does tearing the film leave adhesive residue?

The main components of paint protection film include substrate, adhesive layer, and coating. The adhesive layer determines the degree of adhesion, whether it will delaminate and stick off the car paint, whether it will bubble, and also has a certain impact on whether it will turn yellow. Therefore, the main reason for glue retention on the paint surface depends on the adhesive layer of the paint facial mask.

1. Adhesive retention caused by improper film tearing

When there is slight adhesive residue in certain parts of the car paint, it is mainly caused by the tearing technique or angle.

2. Adhesive retention caused by improper film application

Many unregulated stores or car owners do not clean the paint surface before applying the film, resulting in residual air conditioning water, resin, etc. These residues can react chemically with the adhesive, leading to adhesive retention.

3. Glue retention caused by inferior glue

Poor quality glue is the main reason for large areas of adhesive retention. Poor quality glue has poor stability and does not have weather resistance, making it very easy to oxidize and deteriorate, resulting in hardening of the adhesive layer, large areas of adhesive retention during film tearing, and even damage to the original factory car paint.

How to handle residual glue?

Hot air guns and glue removers are commonly used treatment methods. There are generally two ways to handle residual glue: the owner handles it themselves or the store handles it. When the adhesive marks are not severe, car owners can use alcohol, cleaning agents, etc. to remove them. When there is a large area of adhesive residue, professional stores need to handle it.

Solution

1. Slight adhesive residue

Cover the residual glue with a hot towel, wait for it to soak in water and wet thoroughly, then wipe repeatedly with a towel (can be used in combination with alcohol, wind oil essence, etc.).

2. Local adhesive retention

First, wipe the adhesive area clean with a clean towel, and then use a glue remover to spray on the towel or directly spray on the residual adhesive to wipe off the glue marks.

3. Large area adhesive retention

Going to a professional construction store, using tools such as a hot air gun to soften the residual adhesive, then spraying a glue remover or asphalt cleaner, and applying flour, wearing gloves, and carefully and slowly rubbing off is a more reliable way to remove it. At the same time, the store will also adopt a more professional film tearing angle and method for film tearing.

4. Solve the problem of adhesive retention from the root (adhesive layer)

You should choose invisible car clothing from legitimate brands and stores. The root cause of adhesive residue in car clothing is the adhesive layer. Therefore, when inferior substrates are mixed with inferior adhesive, their weather resistance and stability are poor, making it easy to peel off.

Motec Paint Protection Film adopts a Japanese imported adhesive layer, which leaves no residue and is environmentally friendly and non-toxic. Its low viscosity greatly facilitates construction and can fully adhere to the paint surface after installation, without causing damage to the car's paint.
