Motec Paint Protection Film(PPF).Previously, PPF used to cost tens of thousands, but in recent years, the industry has become more competitive and PPF prices have gradually become affordable. However, many car owners still wonder why a plastic film is so expensive to sell? Today, the editor will take you to learn about "PPF" and avoid pitfalls!
What is PPF?
PPF is actually a "car paint protection film", which is very thin and transparent, and is no different from invisible when applied, known as "Paint Protection Film".
Don't be fooled by the fact that PPF only has a thin layer, it's not simple at all! PPF has a total of three layers, namely: substrate layer, adhesive layer, and self-healing coating.
1.Substrate layer
The three popular substrates currently on the market are PVC, PVH, and TPU. Among them, TPU is the mainstream substrate.
1) TPU can be divided into two types based on the different raw materials: aliphatic and aromatic. Aliphatic compounds are far superior to aromatic compounds.
▪ Aliphatic TPU has high stability, good strength and durability, and a high price
▪ The stability of aromatic compounds is poor, which leads to easy yellowing of car clothing PPF and lower prices
2) PVC has poor stability to light and heat, making it the material with the fastest yellowing. And it has poor toughness and is difficult to process.
3) In order to improve toughness, some manufacturers have added plasticizers to PVC, resulting in the so-called "TPH" material. It is much softer than PVC, but over time, the plasticizer will evaporate, which is essentially PVC.
2.Glue layer
1) The substrate of low-quality car clothing is prone to hardening, which reduces the adhesion between the TPU base layer and the adhesive layer, resulting in less adhesion between the adhesive layer and the car paint layer, leading to adhesive retention
2) The adhesive layer of low-quality car clothing has poor heat resistance and durability, and is prone to decay due to long-term exposure to sunlight and rain, resulting in reduced viscosity and adhesive retention
3.Self repairing coating
The so-called self-healing coating is actually composed of a highly elastic polymer resin material.
1) According to the curing method, it can be divided into two categories:
Heat curing: The resin is rich in a large amount of hydroxyl groups, which can react with the curing agent, improve the crosslinking density, and thus enhance the stain resistance performance
UV curing: Poor weather resistance, easy to crack, gradually phased out by the market
2) According to repair methods, it can be divided into two categories:
Second repair: Scratches usually repair automatically within 10-30 seconds
Heat repair: self repair under the action of hot water or hot air
In the early days, most of them used instant repair, but due to the softness of this resin, it affected its stain resistance. Now, thermal repair coatings are mostly used.
How to choose a PPF that suits you?
There are two options for sticking PPF: partial PPF and full body PFF
Generally speaking, cars are prone to scratches on the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, front fenders, and edges of rearview mirrors. It is recommended to stick partial PPF on cheaper cars.
For models with metallic or pearl paint, due to the high difficulty of repair, it is best to stick the entire body of the car.
What should I pay attention to when pasting PPF?
PPF film cutting is mainly divided into two types: manual cutting and machine cutting
Hand cut: The advantage is complete edge wrapping, high fit, not easy to peel off and dust in, but the disadvantage is that it requires certain technical skills from the master.
Machine cutting: Cut according to the body data, with neat edges and no possibility of scratching the car paint. The disadvantage is that some areas cannot be wrapped, which can easily accumulate dust over time.
How to peel off PPF?
If you plan to peel off PPF, it is best to choose it in summer, as PPF may become brittle at too low a temperature, making it difficult to remove. Remember to heat the old film with a hot air gun and slowly peel it off the paint surface. Do not forcefully peel off the film!
